I lived in the area and went to the shop to check it out before I made an appointment. I didn't like what I saw. There isn't a protocol for greeting guests, a little dirty for my taste, but these things can change hour to hour. I'm a people person so I asked each of the 4 customers if she was on her first visit and how did she like it. All were 2 or 3 time patrons and all were missing hair on their temples and the hairlines. They complained about scalp tension but thought it was normal for the style to look good. I asked about their quality of service and they clammed up. No yay or nay just quiet. I thanked the ladies (not the braiders) and left. I learn from other peoples mistakes and to be quiet candid, I doubt I'll be going to an African shop anytime soon. I have nappy hair pass my bra clasp and I want to keep it. I suggest you ladies learn to do your own or go to someone with a gentle hand and good technique.
I went to this shop once. They were using nail glue on my hair, which I didn't notice until they had finished 1/4 of my head. Once I noticed it, they said it was to help the braids last longer but I complained so they stopped using it. My braids were very nice. They were done by 2 people. However, when I went to take my hair down I ended up cutting the braids that nail glue was used. I didn't have any hair loss at my temple. Maybe this practice has changed. Its been a few years since I went there. Also, as with the majority, if not all, of the African braiding shops, I was quoted a different price over the phone than in the shop. The person I spoke with about a reasonable price never showed up.I ended up paying more than I expected, but still less than the price others paid. As far as customer service, they weren't rude but didn't say much to anyone but each other. It takes several hours to get braids done. They never offered a bathroom break, lunch break, nothing. But my braids were cute!!!
