Haircut $17, Beard Trim $8. What I got doesn't look bad, but it's not what I wanted. I asked for short on the sides and long on the top. Let's see, side short-yes, long on top-nope just a tad longer than the sides. She basically gave me a regular haircut. I asked her to make my beard look neat. I had only practiced limited trimming for the five months I've been growing it. It was 2 inches now it's only 1 inch! It usually takes about a week for a haircut to grow out and look good, it's going to take a month for my beard to grow back decently. I am dissatisfied. 3 stars b/c it still looks ok, and she was quite meticulous. I had to take my glasses off while getting the cut so I couldn't really see what she was doing. Plus I had to lean my head back during the beard trim. I should have interrupted her just to see what she was doing.
DO NOT let the fat asian man cut your hair.
I have been going to the Van Dorn Barber Shop for almost four years now. My brother told me about this place when I moved here. There are three main barbers that work there, Henry, Don, and Sonny. Henry is my barber and does a great job. I have a fairly simple hairstyle, so that probably helps. He is very friendly and seems to enjoy his job. I usually visit on Sunday afternoon and there's usually a short wait. But sometimes I'm able to be seen right away. They have your typical stack of magazines to read while you wait, or you can watch the flat screen TV hanging on the far wall. It's a no frills barbershop, but when you find a good barber you should keep going back.
I tried a few barber shops when I moved to Alexandria eight years ago. The Van Dorn Barber Shop quickly became my favorite. All three of the barbers are very good. I've never had a problem with getting a cut from any of the guys. I like their attention to detail. My cut is always very sharp. I usually don't wait long when I go to the shop. They are open every day which is really nice. I typically go on Sundays when the wait times are short (especially during Redskins games). The shop is very nice. It's always clean. They have a flat screen TV which you can watch while you get your hair cut. There's plenty of free parking available. The barber shop is conveniently located by several supermarkets, restaurants, a dry cleaners, a warehouse club, car wash, CVS, etc. I like that because I can knock out a bunch of chores at once, and save gas. ;-)
For $15 I could have been better, but overall it was a good quick cut, would probably try somewhere else if I had more time
